I never weary of great churches. They are my favourite kind of mountain scenery. Mankind was never so happily inspired as when it created a great cathedral.    – so said Robert Louis Stevenson 1850 – 1894

On reflection, there must have been inspiration aplenty surrounding the building of the gorgeous Cologne Dom.

One of the enjoyable things about our recent Viking holiday was the informative sightseeing walks. We would usually explore a little of each day’s new territory on foot learning about the culture and history as we went.

There were always cities, villages, castles or other historical landmarks to acquaint ourselves with ……..and walking actually seemed to allow us more time to really get to know an area as we burnt off some of those extra kilojoules we’d been consuming (mind you this was probably deemed more important by those of us with the weakest willpower; unfortunately that would have to include me I’m afraid!)

Well for today’s walk we’d soon be visiting the enormous Cologne Cathedral. We would then view and discuss the surrounding old-town areas of the Cologne city centre, with its cobble-stoned streets and its many centuries of German and early Roman history.

Cologne is currently Germany’s 4th largest city. Built right on the banks of the Rhine, it is said to have been established by the Romans back in the 1st Centrury A.D.

Tragically, it suffered major damage during World War II. This necessitated a painstaking and costly rebuild in the post war era. The Cologne Cathedral or DOM took many hits from bombers during the war years. However, it actually remained standing despite much of Cologne being flattened around it.

Today, Cologne DOM is ranked up there as one of the tallest gothic cathedrals in the world. It is graced with much elaborate detail and quality craftsmanship. You really have to stop to contemplate how difficult it must have been to build a structure such as this…and especially way back then. Without access to any modern day technology it would have been an enormous challenge for the early artisans. Today it is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You can actually choose to go right on up to the top of the structure if you wish. You need considerable perseverance though, as I believe there are some 500 steps to be negotiated in all.

Earlier that morning, and prior to our scheduled daily walk, dearly beloved  (D.B.) and I had actually contemplated this climb (rather enthusiastically I recall at the time). Unfortunately we’d then run out of puff……. After the informative morning walk, we’d decided to head right on back to the Longship for one of those delicious Viking lunches. Sadly, I have to report that by the mid afternoon we’d totally lost our earlier resolve. However…. I believe others did manage to climb to the very top. Those that did were justly rewarded for their efforts with the most splendid views out over the city and river.

My D.B. was quite taken with some of the DOM’s early building history. I noted he was showing greater than usual levels of interest….actually paying attention – especially in relation to the fact that the cathedral build was said to have been finally completed by a team of Prussians in around the mid 19th century.

Well…… being of (possible) Prussian heritage himself, D. B. truly enjoyed this minor detail (even today he continues to put much more emphasis on it than one would expect).  He still holds his head rather high as he states with considerable (possibly) Prussian pride “well you know it was actually my mob that finally got this whole job finished!”

Afterall, the cathedral had been “under construction” for a total of some 650 or so years in all. I guess that does seem like a mighty long time to be building anything. It is truly an amazing structure with unbelievable architectural detail. As is often said….. they just don’t build them like this anymore!

And we certainly don’t have any of them in Australia…AKA God’s own Country! (Now explain that!)

Later the same afternoon (with free time to explore Cologne on our own), we’d headed back into town. By now, we were feeling somewhat weary after having walked in the morning and eaten yet another delicious Viking lunch back onboard the ship (soup, salad, savoury dish and sweets).

For the rest of the afternoon we simply opted for a relatively relaxing way to see a little more of this lovely German city. We boarded one of those rather charming, but I must also say….. rather extremely bumpy, little sightseeing trains. This allowed us to explore a little further out from the main cobble-stoned old-town areas which we’d meandered through earlier in the day.

Then it was back to our longship for cocktails and another lovely dinner before sailing away.

Day 3 – A Magical Sunrise on our way to Cologne

It was dawn on day 3…..and there to greet us as we’d pulled back our stateroom curtain was the most amazing sunrise. It lit up the whole sky with the most beautiful colour display.

Sunrise Day 3

Sunrise Day 3

It  illuminated the entire landscape as it reflected magnificently in the tranquil waters of the Rhine. Oh and I do so love a beautiful sunrise.

I watched in awe at its unfolding beauty, just marvelling at the wonders of nature while capturing these precious moments on my beloved camera.

Such a Magical Sunrise

Back at home we usually arise early. Afterall, we often have to rush to get organized for a busy day at work.

Here on the Viking Tor Longship we knew we could be sleeping in. Mornings were very relaxed and so far we’d been having the most wonderful holiday; a time where all we really needed to do was simply reflect on the days weather, leisurely dress in some comfortable clothes (thankfully Viking promotes casual dressing) and saunter off down to the Main Dining Room, or alternatively, up to the Main Lounge/Aquavit Terrace for some breakfast.

But on this particular morning, the first light of the day was doing an extremely good job of distracting us and putting on a most spectacular display.

We were currently sailing towards Cologne (Koln as it’s called in Germany) which I believe is about the fourth largest city in Germany (Population of about 1.017 million; land Area 405 kilometers square).

Our breakfasts on Viking were friendly social events; there were fellow travelers to greet, dining preferences to be decided, a day’s itinerary to be pondered and many new interests to be explored.

Our food choices allowed for either a light continental or full cooked breakfast (the choice of course was up to you). A delicious buffet was always at the ready especially if you just wanted to save time rather than ordering from the more extensive menu.

Personally dearly beloved and I always liked to mix it up a little. Sometimes we’d simply choose from the buffet. At other times we liked to choose from the main breakfast menu.

I recall the “Eggs Benedict” was simply delicious.

Although you know, when I think about it now, I really do believe I may have caused those poor Viking waiters a wee bit of grief. I always like to order my “Eggs Benedict” rock hard…no runny yolks for me thank you very much. But as everyone knows a hard poached egg always takes much longer to cook….. and especially when someone wants it as hard as I do.

Now in hindsight, I think perhaps those lovely waiters may  have actually preferred to duck for cover when they saw me coming!! Ah but in reality they were always so gracious.

Despite this it was always breakfast with a smile even if they were moaning under that polite outer shell!!

We really enjoyed the magical slowness of these mornings on our Longship. Many of us just liked to simply sit, to catch up on the daily news from back home, pen a post card or two, or simply chat……..we’d often wile away an hour or so just watching the river go by as we anticipated what lay ahead.

Amazing Colour

Amazing Colour

Soon after this it would be off with a WHOOSH as we readied for the “soar and explore” sightseeing agenda of this new exciting day.

As the wheels touched down, we knew we had actually survived the long haul journey from Australia.

Spring is in the Air- Munich Shopping 2013

Our beloved Gold Coast (aka, God’s own country/ our homeland) now seemed such a long, long way away. It was already some twenty-eight or so travel hours behind us. While memories of Queensland, will always be memories of true paradise, due to the region’s absolute natural beauty……. for now, they were fading quickly.

This large new cosmopolitan city with its age-old cultural highlights and urban, Germanic lifestyle,  was presently clamouring for our undivided attention.

Despite our travel weariness, we had to acknowledge that deep inside we knew our real adventures were only just beginning.

Finally, we had landed in Munich, Germany (locally known as Munchen to the Bavarian Regional Natives).

Golden Statue at Franz Joseph Airport Munich

Yes… here we were at the Franz Joseph Airport….We’d travelled half way round the globe and we had now actually landed in the northern hemisphere.

We’d arrived. It was Spring.

The air was still quite chilly after the long northern winter that had hung on for so long this year. The early morning was about to unveil our new agendas.

Despite the jet lag, we were off to visit the once-in-every-three-year, big machinery and construction expo called  Bauma, in down town Munich (known well and eagerly attended by all of those in the building and construction industries). My better half was more excited than I felt he should have been by such a work related prospect. Meanwhile, his better half was rather tired and weary, and yet, still somewhat curious about how the day might unfold.

But first, there were the usual mundane quandaries to attend to such as customs, luggage collection and geographical orientation —“Where was our hotel anyway and where were we in relation to its location?” These were the serious questions of the moment. Despite beginning to negotiate our way through the added difficulties of language translation and cultural orientation, we were already feeling that this was indeed a great and magical place to be. Somehow an element of ethereal happiness was wrapping us in its cocoon.

Wide Open Expanses -Kempinski Hotel Munich Airport

Our accommodation booking was for the architecturally grand Kempinski Hotel, in Terminal 2, at Franz Joseph Airport. The Kempinski Hotel at the airport is just one of those buildings that has to stand out in a crowd, with its dazzling glass and steel structure and its wide open expanses. The grandness certainly wasn’t lost on us. “Just amazing”, we thought as we looked on it for the very first time.

We were truly exhausted, yet amazingly, still oh so very alive with the freshness of the early morning experience. It wasn’t yet 6.00am. and we were excited by the prospect that our first day in the Bavarian Capital was only just about to dawn.

Greatest Regrets:

Sadly we didn’t actually get to see even half of the above due to both of us getting sick shortly after arrival in Munich but we will go back again one day as there is just so much to do and see.

One lonely little travel pillow and a pink toweling massage cushion

The phone rang shrilly echoing in the silent blackness. Startled, we sprang quickly into sitting positions. “What was that?” …..”Where were we?”

The immediate surroundings were strangely dark and unfamiliar.

Turning on the light, we quickly looked all over. We could see our many belongings spilling across the room. There were small suit cases, toiletry bags, changes of clothes, jeans, a laptop, mobile phones, my beloved camera and even a couple of heavy overcoats (heavy overcoats in Singapore we must be nuts after all!!) There was a little pink toweling massager just in case one of us happened to suffer a cricked neck on the plane. You know the story…”I had to pack it just in case!”

And lastly there was still one…yes only just one, top-of-the-range, lonely little travel pillow laying on the desk in the room. You see my dearly beloved had already lost his this morning, even before we flew out of Brisbane. It had never been used, not once and it was gone already!!

Needless to say I had a few thoughts of my own about this!! Ah but, better to keep my health and keep them to myself, at least for now, I thought…and until the time is right!

We were still at Changi International Airport, in our amazingly comfortable little transit hotel, where we’d been staying for several hours while on route to our Grand European Sojourn in Europe. In the comfort of this little transit hotel’s peaceful surrounds we had finally been able to take a bit of a nap and had, in fact, dozed rather soundly for more than a couple of hours.

But, as always, time marches on. We would be leaving Singapore at around midnight for the last fourteen hour, long-haul part of our journey north-west through to Munich, Germany.

Time now to have a cuppa and then be on our way.

Within fifteen minutes we were off and running, juggling once again, our way too many belongings, plus tickets and passports. It wasn’t long before we were vowing adamantly to travel lighter… we just had so much hand luggage…never ever again!

We’re back to reality after a glorious holiday where we’ve been totally pampered and spoilt and now, I feel strangely sad about it all. I feel as though time must have sped up during that short exciting time while we were in Europe. Everyday normality and daily routine have faithfully returned and all that’s left are the rich and colourful memories.

Do you ever feel like this too when you return from a wonderful holiday?

1-Michelle Davies- Painted Ceiling on Melk Abbey Tour

It was brought home to me yet again, after our recent four-and-a-half week sojourn through Europe.

Having never been lucky enough to visit the northern countries before, the pre-trip waiting period had seemed rather dismal and eternal. You know the feeling and the extremely repetitive kitchen-table conversations…”You know we leave in just six months”; “It will go quickly”; “It’s now only five months and twenty days until we fly out”; and “We’ll be leaving in just five more months and ten days and four hours” and so the count down goes on and on.

In the lead up to our departure, the week days actually seemed somehow longer. The weekends also felt less interesting than they had previously and all because we were in what I call “the waiting period“: that eternal period of time when you’re just hanging around and  longing to embark on what you believe is going to be, the trip of a life time.

Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary were all on our bucket list for, what would be, our very first sightseeing adventures through Europe. Three glorious weeks of doing our own thing and two action packed weeks of being totally spoiled by the wonderful Viking Crew on their fifteen day river cruise that would take us all the way from Amsterdam to Budapest across five countries and down three rivers.

And now what?

Well you see…We’re back!

Michelle Davies-Stuhmcke -Gold Coast Skyline

It’s all behind us now and “Yes”…we’re firmly back in Terra Australis, Queensland already, with all of our grand memories and increased knowledge of Europe’s wonderful geography, modern history and cultural delights. We’re back with our 3000 odd photos and our trunk full of souvenirs.

We’re back already on the Gold Coast to be precise and really, isn’t our own country, Australia, supposed to be “God’s Own Country” with its modern high-rise cities, its pristine beaches, its folkloric outback wilderness regions and it’s absolutely glittering coastal resorts?

If, indeed,  this is “God’s Own Country” we’re living in, then why is it that I long for the excitement of planning yet another journey to exotic far off lands. And…. how did it all happen so quickly? Four and a half weeks was supposed to be a long time, or so I thought. But truly it just flew past so very fast. Time, I think, must surely speed up as soon as you board a plane. I’m convinced of it. Time just seems to fly when you’re being spoiled and having so much fun! Why won’t the good times just slow down a little?

If I sort through some of the memories, highlights and photos perhaps I can at least relive some of it for a while. This is my first blog and it’s written to share with you (if you’re interested) the fun times and the highlights of our recent European Sojourn.
